+Call to Worship

Leader: Let me hear what God the LORD will speak, for he will speak peace to his people,

People: to his faithful, to those who turn to him in their hearts.

Leader: Surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him,

People: that his glory may dwell in our land....
Leader:  The LORD will give what is good,
People: and our land will yield its increase.

Leader: Righteousness will go before him,

People: and will make a path for his steps.

Today, O God, as the world lurches once more toward Bethlehem like some great beast dreaming of transformation, hear our prayers for the many peoples of the earth:  for the children of every land, whose lives will be forever affected by what they are taught and how they are cared for; for the poor, who can never rest until they know there will be food and shelter for them and their families; for those entrusted with the good news of Christ, who face such awesome difficulties in the achievement of their mission; and for the leaders of nations, whose honesty and skillfulness mean so much in determining the future welfare of millions.  We pray especially for our president and his cabinet as they seek to lead our nation toward the fulfillment of its great duty in a world of suffering and want; grant that your Spirit may so preside in their hearts that their efforts will coincide with your holy will.  Our wills are ours, O God, to make them yours.  Grant that the child of Bethlehem may lead us, that we may find new centeredness for our own lives this Christmas, that we may not lose our sensitivity through busyness or crowdedness, that we may surrender to love and faith and find joy in denying ourselves for the sake of others.  Let the mysteries and memories of this season that affect us in such deep ways bring us caroling to your throne, overwhelmed by the knowledge that we are yours and you are ours, through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.
